The Padres have signed Geary to a minor league contract.
ANALYSIS
In the most recent chapter of his career, Geary has been mainly a Triple-A reliever, appearing in just 16 major league games since 2008. He will likely remain in the minors for the beginning of the 2011 season.

Geary dealt with a groin injury in what was otherwise a fantastic season for the 32-year-old righty. He was one of Houston's most reliable bullpen arms, making 55 appearances and posting a 2.53 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. No matter who closes for the Astros, Geary will be one of his primary set-up guys, but don't be surprised if his numbers slide a bit in 2009 after he benefited from a .237 BABIP last season. As far as staff fillers go, you could probably do better.
Geary was acquired by the Astros in the five-player deal that sent Brad Lidge to the Phillies. He struggled at times during the 2007 season with inconsistency and injuries, even getting demoted to Triple-A for a stretch. He was also injured late in the year and was left off the postseason roster. At 31, the upside is very limited, but Geary has good command and four pitches, qualities that should allow him to keep drawing a major league paycheck for a few more years.
Geary's establishment as a viable reliever got back on track after a shaky first half: batters hit .325 against him before the break and .239 afterwards. He is now 10-2 with a 3.78 ERA in his career and sports a neat 135:60 K:BB. He can also pitch well in Philadelphia, since he induces a good amount of ground balls.
Geary's a Quadruple-A player who made some strides towards major league competence last year. Of course, that means he's a garbage man, if anything.
Geary had a rough rookie season in mop-up duty for the Phillies. He might eventually stick as a middle reliever, but he's no one to get excited about.
A pitcher who can start or save, Geary was named Triple-A Scranton's pitcher of the year after winning 10 games and saving five games as he was moved back and forth from the mound to the pen. He struck out 80 while only walking 13 in 87.2 innings. He could be a versatile pitcher if he sticks with the Phils.
