With the combination of good defense, adequate speed and a versatile glove, Salazar does just enough to get by as a spare outfielder at the big league level. Since he can provide a left-handed bat off the bench, Salazar will have the tie-breaker in most competitions for one of the final spots on the active roster. His limited offensive upside will keep him from becoming an everyday player regardless of his organization, but he'll begin 2009 competing for a bench gig with the Pirates.
Salazar has the blend of good defense, speed on the basepaths and a left-handed bat that makes for an excellent bench option in the bigs. Tools wise, he's former D-Back Jeff DaVanon - albeit a left-handed hitting only version - while his ceiling will be as a fourth outfielder so long as he's in Arizona.
With Willy Taveras coming over from Houston in the Jason Jennings trade, Salazar's chance at a starting job appears to have gone out the window. There's still some potential here—he has good speed, a little power and excellent on-base skills. He's also an excellent defender in center field. At age 26, he doesn't need further minor league development, so look for Salazar to break camp as a reserve outfielder.
Salazar spent 2005 between Double-A and Triple-A, showing good leadoff skills, speed, a little pop and patience at the plate. He'll start 2006 in Triple-A and may see some time with the Rockies if they're unable to find a permanent center fielder.
Salazar's gaudy Single-A numbers in 2004 didn't carry over to Double-A Tulsa and he still must prove that he can adjust to Double-A pitching before taking the next step. At his age, if he can put it together he could find himself with a quick promotion to Triple-A. Best-case, Salazar could play into a September call-up in 2005.
Salazar, the 2002 eighth-rounder out of Oklahoma State, is a very toolsy prospect, which is unusual in mid-to-low round college pick His speed and defence were considered upper-tier but he suddenly developed power in 2003. He now has the potential for much more although he’ll need to replicate it in 2004 in the high Single-A California League
