Herrera's prospect status has declined rapidly since 2006, missing all of that season with a torn elbow ligament and following it up with two poor seasons at Double-A Midland. He showed little growth in 2008 (.267/.330/.439 and just 22 walks against 71 Ks in 255 at-bats), and there's now considerable doubt that he'll ever live up to expectations.
Herrera returned with a decent, but not great, season after missing all of 2006 with a torn elbow ligament. His .274/.337/.448 line at High-A Stockton included a 19:60 BB:K ratio in 252 at-bats, and his brief time spent at Double-A (.254/.316/.451 in 71 at-bats) wasn't much better. He'll be 23 when the season starts, and will need to hit well at Triple-A Sacramento if he wants to fulfill his potential.
Missed the entire 2006 season due to a torn elbow ligament after a nice season at Low-A Kane County as a 20-year old in 2005. He's still plenty young enough to make an impact, but he'll need to hit the ground running.
Herrera started the year failing a drug test and sat out 15 games as a result. Just 20 years old, he hit .275/.374/.444 at Low-A Kane County, with effective speed. He could end up a better outfield prospect than Andre Ethier, but we won't know until Herrera handles the jump to more advanced pitching.
