Albaladejo signed a minor-league contract with the Mets on Monday, Marc Carig of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
The former big-league pitcher will make a return to provide starting pitching depth for the Mets. He spent the earlier portion of the 2017 season in independent ball, where he went 7-6 and produced a 4.44 ERA in 16 starts. Albaledejo will be thrown right into the fire, as he's starting for Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday night.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

Albaladejo began last year in the majors but yo-yoed between New York and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for much of the season. While his sharp slider worked effectively, his low-90s fastball was hittable, resulting in an ugly 1.660 WHIP, and his sputtering command deflated his K:BB ratio to 21:16. He’ll likely be putting more miles on his New York-to-Scranton bus pass in 2010.
A sprained right elbow cut Albaladejo's season short, as he was eventually diagnosed with a stress fracture and shut down for good in June. In limited relief work at the big league level between Washington and New York over the last two seasons, Albaladejo has put together a 25:8 K:BB ratio in 28 innings, relying on a low-90's fastball and biting slider. As long as he's able to stay healthy, Albaladejo will be among the options to work in middle relief for the Yankees in 2009.
Albaladejo overcame a history of weight trouble and questions about his motivation in the Pirates organization to rise all the way from Double-A to the majors with the Nationals, and used his low-90's fastball and biting slider to good effect in a brief stint with Washington. Traded to the Yankees in the offseason, he'll battle for a middle-relief spot in the spring.
