ANALYSIS
"It just wasn't a fit here," according to Colorado manager Clint Hurdle. Thompson had hoped to win a Triple-A roster spot. While he has certainly fallen from prospect status, Thompson still has something to offer. He went 9-8 with a 3.70 ERA and 1.38 WHIP last season in 133.2 minor-league innings, mostly at Double-A. The 25-year-old left-hander should be able to find a Triple-A job elsewhere.

Thompson is still a developing talent. He made some strides with a selection to the Double-A Southern League's 2006 All-Star Game. A 24-year-old lefty with a nasty curveball, Thompson could earn a big league call-up in September. If he keeps developing like this, he should be a major factor in San Diego's 2008 plans.
Although Thompson is a decent prospect, don't be misled by his high strikeout totals. His fastball hits only the high 80s, so he gets by with a superior curveball. His small stature is seen as a ceiling on his growth, but his pro numbers thus far have said otherwise. This year will be Thompson's first full season at Double-A, and a good test of whether his future is in the rotation or the bullpen.
The fifth rounder from 2002 is smallish at 5-11, 160 pounds, but possesses the finest curveball in the lower system. He's a riser based on this past season's low Single-A performance and a 10.29 strikeout average in his first three years as a pro. Still young and developing, his time at high Single-A and possibly Double-A Mobile in 2005 should give us a better read on expectations.
