Speier improved his game against lefties last year, enabling him to get through complete innings without needing a rescue. He keeps the ball down -- coming from the side -- and if he's not likely to end up back in the closer mix, he'll have a long career getting groundballs in the seventh inning. No fantasy value, though he'll likely save 2-4 games a year at random.
Speier split time between the majors and Triple-A in 2007. He recorded 33 saves at Triple-A and could fill a late-inning relief role for the Rockies in 2008. He has trouble locating his pitches at times and will have to improve if he wants to stick in the majors.
Speier missed all of 2006 after surgery in February to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. His only major league experience consists of 24.2 unimpressive innings in 2005. Combine that with a serious arm operation, and you can ignore Speier this year.
Speier started the year at the major league level but was quickly demoted to Triple-A. He was recalled for the last month of the season, though, and posted a 1.04 ERA and .170 BAA in 17 1/3 IP. His K/BB ratio was a little troubling at 7:10 especially when he averaged 9.58 strikeouts per nine innings in the minors, but it looks like he'll earn a spot to start the year in the Colorado bullpen.
Speier, the 2004 Minor League Rolaids Relief Man winner, had a spectacular year closing for Double-A Tulsa. If Colorado moves Shawn Chacon and with their closer situation far from settled, he'll be in the majors sooner than later if he can prove himself at Triple-A or even in spring training.
