Bowyer, acquired from the Twins last offseason for Luis Castillo, was expected to compete for the closer's role, but instead missed the entire season with a shoulder injury. The Marlins will again be looking for a closer in 2007, and Bowyer's pre-injury power repertoire would seem to be ideally suited for the role, but until he proves he's healthy he's a long shot at best to have any impact.
Bowyer put up some impressive strikeout totals at Triple-A last season (96/40 K/BB ratio in 74 1/3 innings) and could win the closer role for the Marlins or serve as a primary set-up man after his trade from the Twins for Luis Castillo. He could be a nice sleeper as a result.
Bowyer finished 2004 a combined 9-3 with a 97/55 K/BB ratio in 91 innings pitched between Single-A and Double-A. He'll likely return to Double-A to start 2005. He's seen as a second tier pitching prospect in the Twins system but another strong year could make him a factor in the majors in 2006.
