ANALYSIS
Hayes went 4-for-14 (.286) this spring, but he was never in a position to challenge for a roster spot. The Rangers have the catcher position on lock at the big league level, so Hayes will head to the minors where he'll serve as organizational depth.

Hayes is your typical light-hitting backup catcher whose strong defensive skills keep him gainfully employed in the MLB world. He saw only five games at the major league level last season, but he's accumulated 375 plate appearances over the last five seasons, producing a .220/.266/.374 line with a 32.3 percent strikeout rate. He'll get a chance to compete for the backup catcher position, but unless there's an injury of some sort, he won't see enough time on the field to warrant owners' attention.
Hayes batted just .202 in 114 at-bats for the Marlins in 2012, scoring only seven runs with three RBI. After being let go by Miami following the season, Hayes was claimed by the Royals and will provide depth at the catcher position for Kansas City behind Salvador Perez. Hayes enters his age-29 season with a paltry .217/.266/.361 line with eight home runs in 332 career at-bats, and with defense being his most useful asset, does not really belong on the radar for most fantasy teams.
Hayes flashed a bit of a power stroke in 2011, popping five home runs in 160 at-bats, but was otherwise his normal invisible-for-fantasy-purposes self. The Marlins seem content with him backing up John Buck, so expect more of the same given the very limited time he'll spend on the field this season. In terms of using him as a second catcher in a deep league, consider his career .225/.284/.417 line and 17:69 BB:K over 239 big league plate appearances and look elsewhere for that depth.
Hayes got a shot at the starting job when both Ronny Paulino and John Baker fell by the wayside, but he was soon felled by a separated shoulder himself. His anemic bat wasn't missed, and while he might win a job in the spring backing up new starter John Buck that still won't make him worth your while.
A desert-fueled batting average in 2008 gave the hope that he might turn out to be more than a defense-first backup catcher, but the Marlins moved their Triple-A affiliate from Albuquerque to New Orleans in 2009 and Hayes' progress with the bat was proven to be a mirage. He got his first taste of the majors in 2009 though, and if the Marlins decide to save a couple hundred thousand bucks on a caddy for John Baker, Hayes will be the guy they turn to down the road as a cut-rate option.
