Casto put up a quintessential Quadruple-A season in 2008, racking up more than a 250-point OPS difference between his lines at Columbus and Washington. He turned 27 this winter, so if he wants to establish himself as even a big league bench player he'd better act quickly.
Casto came into 2007 as arguably the Nationals' top position prospect, but ended it with his status as any kind of prospect in some doubt after a very weak Triple-A campaign and weaker cup of coffee in the big leagues. He showed some power and patience in previous years, but he's already 26 and will need to regain those skills very quickly or risk being tossed on the scrap heap.
Casto had another good season with the bat, posting his second straight 20-HR, 80-BB campaign. He's another player whose prospect status gets enhanced by being in the paper-thin Washington system, but at least Casto has some actual numbers to back up his status. Given his age the Nationals may elect to skip him over Triple-A entirely if he shows he might be ready in spring training.
He was old for the level, but Casto's 2005 at High-A marked him at someone to keep an eye on. If he can produce similar numbers in the minors this season he has a good chance to be a useful major hitter, with the same patient approach as the departed Brad Wilkerson. He's blocked at third base by Ryan Zimmerman, though, so a position switch or trade is likely in the cards if he does keep taking and raking.
