Thayer opted out of his minor league contract with the Orioles on Saturday, MLB Trade Rumors reports.

ANALYSIS
Thayer, a non-roster invitee, put together a rather pedestrian spring for the Orioles, giving up three runs over six innings. That performance put him on the chopping block at final roster cut downs, and rather than waiting to be released at the end of camp, Thayer opted to pursue free agency early. He may have to settle for work at the Triple-A level before reemerging in a bullpen role for an MLB team.

Thayer boasted prolific facial hair and improved control in 2014, but his career-low 2.34 ERA was aided by an 89.0% LOB% and a BABIP (.250) that checked in 38 points below his career norm. When he misses his spot, Thayer gets hit hard -- and he managed to serve up seven of his nine home runs over 32.2 innings at Petco Park. Overall, his numbers away from Petco were actually better than at home, as he held the opposition to a .205/.273/.281 line on the road. Since joining the Padres in 2012, Thayer has appeared in 203 games while pitching a tick above replacement level during that time. Even with the departure of Huston Street in a midseason trade, Thayer wasn't used as a ninth-inning option last season, and he'll have to leapfrog Joaquin Benoit and Kevin Quackenbush to receive that opportunity in 2015.

Following a campaign in which he nearly struck out a batter per inning -- 64 in 65 frames -- Thayer is the logical candidate to slide into the setup role vacated by Luke Gregerson, who was traded to Oakland in the offseason. The well-documented injury history of closer Huston Street may also come to a head at some point, which could result in fantasy relevance for Thayer at some point.

Prior to the 2012 season, Thayer had appeared in just 23 MLB games and done so with little-to-no fan fair. That changed in 2012 as he appeared in 64 games for the Padres with a 3.43 ERA and seven saves to his name. Why it took so long for Thayer to get his big chance is a mystery as he posted a sub-3.00 ERA in six of his seven seasons in the minors. What is clear is that Thayer has earned himself a role as one of the top setup men in the Padres' bullpen. Couple this with closer Huston Street's inability to stay healthy and Thayer could very well see a couple of save chances again in 2013.

Thayer pitched well at Triple-A Durham, posting a 2.27 ERA and a 1.168 WHIP. The Rays have a bunch of solid relievers which was the roadblock to Thayer's path to the majors. He'll get a shot to win a spot in the spring or possibly be traded to address other areas of need for the Rays.

In most organizations, Thayer's 2008 Triple-A numbers would scream for a big league callup. However, the Rays boasted perhaps the best bullpen in the majors last year, so there was absolutely no room for Thayer. He may get a chance to compete for a middle relief role in the spring, or the Rays may place him a trade package for right field/DH help.

After posting great numbers at both Double-A and Triple-A, Thayer likely will get a chance to compete for a bullpen role at the major league level in spring. Even if Thayer doesn't make the Opening Day roster due to a numbers crunch, he easily could be promoted in midseason and be asked to help out in a set-up role. While the Rays have a lot of pitching prospects, many are starters; Thayer has much less competition in his bid to make the Rays' bullpen.
