Montanez, 30, spent most of his 2011 season with Triple-A Iowa in the Cubs organization. He hit .321 with 22 doubles, seven triples, seven homers and 69 RBI in 92 games. At best, he's a fifth outfielder in the majors, but the Phillies have plenty of outfield depth already. Expect Montanez to spend the year in the minors.
A thumb injury wiped out almost all of Montanez's season, but he insisted the Orioles activate him in September. It is difficult to judge a player on so few at-bats, but Montanez did nothing to make us believe he will produce in an everyday role. Meanwhile, there is no job opening in Baltimore's outfield with Nolan Reimold, Adam Jones and Nick Markakis set to man their positions for quite some time.
After leading the Eastern League in a number of statistics through the beginning of August, the Orioles couldn't ignore Montanez anymore. He played well as a platoon outfielder with Luke Scott, while also spelling Adam Jones and Nick Markakis for days off. Montanez had not impressed in two Triple-A stints in 2006 and 2007, but his 2008 season should not be taken lightly. If all goes well in spring training, Montanez will break camp in a similar role with the chance to earn more playing time.
