The Orioles will not offer Rowell a contract during the offseason, which will make him a free agent, MASN Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Rowell never put things together, whether it was due to injuries, nonperformance, or drug suspensions. He did not log an at-bat for the Orioles in 2012. The Orioles certainly regret picking him one pick before Tim Lincecum in the 2006 draft. Rowell could sign with another team looking to take a gamble.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2007
Rowell was very inconsistent in 2008, but he was still very young for High-A ball after being taken in the first round in 2006. Rowell could fit in either at third base or shortstop, but he is still at least two years away from getting a shot in the big leagues. This season will tell us if Rowell is worthy of a keeper league pick next year.
A strained oblique injury forced Rowell to the sidelines early and hampered his production when he initially returned, so don't be too disappointed with his overall numbers for Low-A Delmarva. Rowell didn't turn 19 until September, so the O's first-round pick in the 2006 draft was one of the younger players in the league. He can play either shortstop or third base, although many scouts have him ultimately pegged as a third baseman.
Rowell, the ninth overall pick in the 2006 draft, batted .328/.415/.503 with three homers, 32 RBI and three stolen bases in 195 at-bats for Rookie level Bluefield and Low-A Aberdeen. The 18 year old is currently slotted at shortstop, but might have to move to third base as he fills out his 6-foot-5 frame. Both Miguel Tejada and Melvin Mora are locked up through 2009 at those positions, so it appears the earliest that Rowell would be able to earn a regular major league job is 2010.
