Olt’s time as a Cub came to a close after Kris Bryant took over as the Cubs’ starting third baseman, and the club designated Olt for assignment shortly after he recovered from a lengthy wrist injury. The White Sox picked Olt up via waivers and used him at third base for much of the remainder of the season, with meager results. There may still be the boom in his bat that made him prospect-famous before the 2013 season, but big league success has been hard to find while he strikes out in a third of his plate appearances. Still, the White Sox have few internal options at third, so he should be in the running for a starting role come spring.
Olt came into the season as a bit of a fantasy sleeper after a strong spring, and although he hit 12 home runs in his first season as a Cub, he was demoted in July with an abysmal .139 batting average. He rebounded a tad when he was promoted in September, hitting .263 with six walks in 38 at-bats, but he only drove in three runs during that span and didn't hit a home run. He has a powerful bat, but he connects so rarely (100 strikeouts in 225 at-bats!) that he's always going to be a batting average drain. With Kris Bryant looking like the future at the hot corner, the window may have slammed shut on Olt.
Once one of the jewels of the Texas minor league system, the Rangers traded Olt in the Matt Garza deal in July. And with good reason, as the slugging third baseman struck out 89 times and was hitting just .213 in 65 games for Triple-A Round Rock when he was dealt. Olt was even worse for Triple-A Iowa, posting just a .551 OPS in 131 at-bats. The Cubs have plenty of good options at third base in the minors, so unless Olt starts showing the bat that destroyed the Texas League in 2012, he's going to be passed on the organizational depth chart soon.
Olt wasted away on the Texas bench following a late-season callup, partly due to injury and partly because "That's the way baseball go" was at the helm. He skipped Triple-A Round Rock entirely, blasting his way through the Texas League at a .288/.398/.579 clip. Adrian Beltre isn't going anywhere any time soon, so Olt could inherit the first base role full-time if Texas elects to keep Ian Kinsler at second base and start Jurickson Profar in the minors to begin the year.
Olt was sidelined two months with a broken collarbone, but he showed good power and patience in his first full season after being drafted in 2010. He managed 15 doubles, 14 homers and 48 walks in just 240 at-bats at High-A Myrtle Beach, though the 70 strikeouts are a bit troubling. His Arizona Fall League season earned him a spot on the AFL Top Prospects team, as his .349/.433/.764 line was fueled by 13 homers in just 106 at-bats. Strikeouts were again a problem however, as he fanned 36 times against just 15 walks, which could lead to some struggles upon his initial exposure at Double-A Frisco. The power projects at the major league level if he can make consistent contact.
