Gatewood (unspecified) was activated from Triple-A Salt Lake's 7-day injured list Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Gatewood was placed on the IL in early April due to an unspecified injury, and he missed over a month before his activation Tuesday. The first baseman displayed good power at Triple-A in 2021 with 28 homers and 84 RBI, but he batted only .227 and registered a troubling 34.9 percent strikeout rate. He has yet to get into a game this season.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2018
2016
2015
Simply put, Gatewood had his best year as a pro in 2017, setting career bests in all three slash categories as well as home runs and stolen bases. Strikeouts were as much an issue as ever unfortunately, but he did make tremendous strides in the walk department, reaching base nearly as many times last year (51) as he did in his first three years as a pro (63). His improvement in plate discipline has him back on the prospect radar, and he still possesses impressive raw power. He played briefly at the Double-A level for the first time at the end of last season and figures to open there in 2018. Whether he continues to trend upward will depend on if he can carry over last year's improvements to this year, and ultimately if he can cut down his massive strikeout numbers.
Gatewood started 2015 with Low-A Wisconsin, but was sent back to rookie-level Helena after slashing just .187/.250/.271 and striking out 45 times in 34 games. He showed improvement in his hitting, bumping his OPS up to .807, but still struck out 133 times in 109 games between the two levels. He did improve his walk rate from 5.9 percent in 2014 to 7.4 percent between levels in 2015, which is promising considering his low contact rate. Gatewood is only 20 years old so he still has plenty of time to develop into the power-hitting shortstop that the Brewers want him to be, but he'll have to figure out a way to cut down on the strikeouts in order to live up to his potential.
The Brewers selected Gatewood with the 41st pick in last year’s draft based primarily on his power potential from the shortstop position. Despite the big bat, Gatewood struggled to make contact in his first taste of professional action, hitting just .206 and striking out 71 times over 50 games with the Brewers’ rookie league team in Arizona. Gatewood was taken out of high school, so he will be given plenty of time to develop.
