May 21, 2017
Cravy was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Cravy was recalled just one day earlier to serve as a long man out of the bullpen Saturday against the Cubs, but it ended up being a moot point after the contest was postponed. With the Brewers needing to open up a roster spot to activate Ryan Braun (calf) from the disabled list Sunday, Cravy was deemed expendable. He'll now resume working in relief at Colorado Springs, where he's compiled a 4.26 ERA and 7.5 K/9 rate in 19 innings this season.

It's easy to see potential in Cravy given his solid four-pitch arsenal and fastball capable of touching the mid-90s. But control problems continue to plague him. His 5.91 ERA at Triple-A Colorado Springs can largely be explained by a brutal 4.5 BB/9. In the majors pitching primarily as a reliever, he was better (2.86 ERA), but the peripherals suggest his improvement will prove fleeting. He had a disturbingly low 24.4 percent groundball rate, a poor 3.8 BB/9 and a K/BB under 2.0. He doesn't have the big-time stuff to draw swings and misses, and he hasn't shown well enough in any other facet of his game to make up for it, whether out of the bullpen or in the rotation.
After some success as a starter in the minor leagues, Cravy was up and down in multiple ways during 2015. The right-hander rode the shuttle frequently between Triple-A Colorado Springs and Milwaukee, and mostly struggled during his time in the big leagues. He began his major league stint with a sparkling outing against the Cardinals, but everything went downhill afterward. Cravy finished the season with an 0-8 record, sporting a 5.70 ERA and 1.59 K/BB. Hard contact was also an issue, as Cravy surrendered a .330 BABIP in his rookie campaign. The 26-year-old is in line to compete for a spot in the rotation during the spring thanks to the relative inexperience of his competition, but he won't last long if he pitches like he did for most of 2015.
