Back with Rangers on minor-league deal
CTexas Rangers
April 25, 2017
Lerud re-signed with the Rangers on a minor-league deal, Baseball America's Matt Eddy reports.
ANALYSIS
He was a non-roster spring training invitee, was then released, and is now back with the Rangers at Triple-A Round Rock. While he will serve as organizational catching depth, Lerud is highly unlikely to get a chance in the majors this season, as his primary value is as a veteran catcher who excels at working with young pitchers in the minors.

Lerud got his first taste of the majors this past season when the Phillies had to dig deep into their minor-league catching depth. He was outrighted off the 40-man roster this winter and will serve as catching depth again this season. He's unlikely to find his way back to the majors unless injuries strike the Phillies again.
Lerud, 27, a third-round pick by Pittsburgh in 2003, played for Baltimore’s Double-A club in 2011. The Phillies signed him for organizational depth. Expect him to open the year in Triple-A where he will likely stay for the duration of the season.
Lerud has some pop but his .225 lifetime batting average in five minor league seasons doesn't foretell major league success. Still just 24 years of age, the left-handed hitting catcher saw his first Double-A action in 2008 and put up a .233/.302/.363 line in 146 at-bats. He did hit 12 homers in 393 at-bats at Low-A in 2006. Because of the lack of depth behind the plate throughout Pittsburgh's organization, Lerud could move quickly up the ladder if he figures things out. Still, with a career 139:414 BB:K ratio, the Bucs' 2003 third-round pick has plenty of things to work on in the minors.
