Pena's talents start and end with his glove, as he is completely lost at the plate. Both his batting average and OBP were under .200, and he lost his starting shortstop job to Mike Aviles in the first week of June. His defensive prowess should keep him on the team, but won't guarantee him anything better than a utility role.
Pena was traded to Kansas City in March 2007 and quickly found himself the team’s starting shortstop as a result of lack of organizational depth at the postion. He also hit better than anyone expected in 2007, putting the ball in play 85 percent of the time. He doesn’t walk much, drawing just 10 in ’07, and had just 48 in a three-year minor league career. He will hit at the bottom of the KC lineup, probably with a mediocre average, and man shortstop on a daily basis.
Pena has a good glove, which may land him a utility role, but he offers little for fantasy owners at the plate or on the basepaths. He'll try to win a reserve role this spring.
Pena has a good glove, but doesn't hit enough to win any kind of regular job in the majors. He could get a shot as a utility player at some point with the Braves, but his upside is limited and he offers little speed.
