2012
Boggs was part of the revolving door at the St. Louis closer position last year, saving three games in April before more or less losing the job. His ERA and K:BB ratio have improved every year he's been in the league, but with Jason Motte seizing the closing job late in the year, Boggs probably won't see the ninth-inning opportunities in 2012. If he's lucky, he'll be used as a setup man this year and garner a decent number of holds.
2011
Boggs worked exclusively as a reliever in 2010 after two poor years as a spot starter, and the results were a great improvement in his overall numbers. He stopped being overly hittable last year - after giving up about 11 hits/9 innings in 2008-2009, the number plummeted to 8.02 in 2010. He's a dark horse to close for the Cardinals someday, but he's more likely to continue to pitch out of the bullpen in earlier innings.
2010
Boggs pitched much better as a spot starter in 2009 than he did in his disastrous six-start stint in 2008, but he still allows way too many baserunners (71 hits and 33 walks in 58 innings) to be counted upon at the big league level. He hasn't pitched particularly well in the minors either, so it looks like the best Boggs can hope for in 2010 is to continue to be called up as a spot starter.
2009
Boggs started six games for St. Louis last year, and considering that he gave up 17 runs in his last two starts, he didn't quite look ready for prime time. Lefties in particular teed off on him -- he gave up 24 runs, 13 walks and five homers in just 18.2 innings against left-handed hitters. The good news is he is just 24 and has had some success in Triple-A, so he'll likely get a few spot starts for the Cardinals in 2009.
