2012
Martinez really had no business being in the majors last year but the Phillies kept the Rule 5 pick on their roster all season. Martinez was able to accumulate a significant number of at-bats thanks to the various injuries suffered by the Phillies' aging infielders. Martinez offers little pop or speed but is a decent defender. He's a nice utility player but nothing more. He'll compete for a bench job this spring.
2011
Martinez, who was selected in the Rule 5 draft by the Phillies this winter, hit .272/.312/.408 in 133 games between Double-A and Triple-A last season. Martinez is expected to get a long look for a bench job this spring. He'll be competing with veterans Wilson Valdez and Pete Orr.
