Hellweg signed a minor-league contract with the Pirates on Thursday, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

ANALYSIS
Hellweg will head to Double-A Altoona after spending the past couple seasons bouncing between the minor-league tiers in the Padres' organization. He hasn't pitched in the majors since tossing 30.2 innings with the Brewers in 2013 and is unlikely to have any relevance within the fantasy realm over the remaining weeks of this season.

Hellweg made his return from Tommy John surgery in June, but struggled despite playing in low levels of the minor leagues. He began his season with High-A Brevard County more as a formality for recovery, but was sent back there after posting a horrid 9.60 ERA and 2.80 WHIP in 15 innings with Double-A Biloxi. The fireballer didn't exactly impress with the Manatees, either, as he posted a 4.89 ERA and 1.59 WHIP with only a 5.5 K/9. Now 27 years old, he's at a crossroads in his career and it's reasonable to think that he will be making a permanent shift to bullpen work in the not-so-distant future, but Hellweg will begin the next chapter as a member of the Padres' organization after he signed a minor league deal with San Diego in November.

Hellweg’s 2014 season was over almost as soon as it started after he suffered an elbow injury in April and underwent Tommy John surgery. Hellweg was one of the Brewers’ better starting pitcher prospects, but he really struggled with the big club in 2013 and has a fastball that can reach the upper-90s, so it remains to be seen if he will remain in a starting role moving forward, particularly with him missing nearly all of last season.

Though Hellweg earned his first trip to the big leagues by posting a nifty 3.15 ERA in the PCL last season, he received a harsh dose of reality with the Brewers, posting a 6.75 ERA and walking nearly a batter per inning over his eight appearances (seven starts). Despite the rough showing, all is not lost for Hellweg, as he was just 24 years old last season. He throws a fastball that reaches the upper 90s, but gets more movement when he throws in the lower 90s, and he is still learning how to get good hitters out having reached Triple-A for the first time in 2013. Hellweg figures to open there in 2014, but he could see some time in the Brewers’ rotation at some point.

The Brewers used Hellweg primarily as a reliever after acquiring him from the Angels in the Zack Greinke trade, but he had a strong overall season in his first go-around at Double-A, posting a 3.29 ERA in 139.2 innings over 28 games, including 23 starts, between the two organizations. Hellweg's issues with walks are evident in his career 6.4 BB/9 rate, but he has also given up just 13 home runs in 325.1 career innings. The Brewers have yet to decide on Hellweg's role for this season, and though he is expected to spend spring training with the big club, it is likely that he will open 2013 in the minors, especially if the development plan calls for him to remain a starter.

Hellweg's prospect status jumped in 2011 thanks to his success as a starter late in the season. Over his final 10 games, all starts, Hellweg posted a 2.44 ERA and an impressive 71:20 K:BB ratio in 48 innings. Overall he posted an 11.4 K/9IP rate in 2011 after putting up a 13.6 K/9IP mark the year before, so it's clear he knows how to strike guys out. Hellweg still needs to do a better job limiting baserunners (1.500 WHIP in 2011), but his stock will continue to rise if he can maintain his success in the starting role.
