ANALYSIS
At 38, he's not going to be much of a factor in Japan or elsewhere. He's the poster child for failed sabremetric darlings as his plate discipline and power in the minors never panned out in the majors.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

Petagine is still a stat-head darling who knows how to get on base, but may not be in Boston's plans for 2006. The team is giving indication that Kevin Youkilis will be given the opportunity to win the starting first base job, and it is in contact with free agents (J. T. Snow and Travis Lee) to be Youk's backup. Petagine was designated for assignment in February.
After never getting much of a chance to establish himself in the majors, Petagine crossed the Pacific in 1999 and became Japan's version of Albert Pujols for the next five seasons. However, after an injury required knee surgery following the 2003 season, Petagine "slipped" to .290/.413/.561 with 27 HR in 117 games in 2004, and Yomiuri decided to non-tender him in the offseason. He is vying for the backup first base job in Boston with competition coming from Kevin Youkilis and David McCarty.
