RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2016

There was no outlook written for Travis Ishikawa.

2015

Who cares how bad his 2014 season was – the walk-off home run to propel the Giants into the World Series is a moment nobody can take from him. In short, this is a Quad-A player who cannot hit lefties and is a horrible defensive player. He owns an overall slash line of .256/.320/.390 in the big leagues and has struck out 24 percent of the time. He can stick on a second-division major league roster and get time against righties at first base or left field, but that is his upside. He is free-agent fodder, and fantasy owners should not let the postseason heroics inflate his stock.

2013

Ishikawa did not play in the majors in 2011, but he put himself back on the map by excelling in a part-time role with the Brewers in 2012. Ishikawa does not possess much power, but he has a good glove at first base and knows how to work an at-bat off the bench. He will attempt to secure a roster spot with the Orioles during spring training after signing a minor league deal in December.

2011

Ishikawa finished 2010 with just three homers and a .712 OPS over 158 at-bats, getting the majority of his playing time as a defensive replacement. He's absolutely useless against left-handed pitching, but his defense at first base is Gold Glove caliber. Ishikawa could enter 2011 with the same role, although that may change as soon as prospect Brandon Belt proves he's ready.

2010

Ishikawa failed in his bid to secure the Giants’ first-base job last season, hitting just .261/.329/.387 with only nine homers. He’s one of the best defensive first basemen in baseball, but his bat is nowhere near potent enough for a corner infielder. Ishikawa is worthless against southpaws, and he’s one of the worst breaking ball hitters in the league. He’s no longer viewed a possible long-term option within the organization, so a bench role is the best he can expect in 2010.

2009

Despite posting a subpar .768 OPS during his 95 at-bats last season with the Giants, the team has tentatively penciled him in as the starting first baseman for 2009. He’s a solid defender but lacks the power needed at a corner infield position. John Bowker, and especially Nate Schierholtz deserve a chance to compete for the job, and there’s also the possibility of San Francisco bringing in someone else via trade. Ishikawa’s upside is very limited.

2008

Ishikawa is a fine defender but doesn't possess the bat necessary to be a major league first baseman. He struggled mightily in Double-A last year (.587 OPS) and doesn't figure to be in San Francisco's long-term plans.

2007

Ishikawa is a fine defender but doesn't possess the bat necessary to be a major league first basemen. He had an .820 OPS in limited action in the majors last year but hit just .232/.316/.403 in 298 Double-A at-bats and really struggled in the AFL. He's set to open the year in the minors again this year.

2006

Don't get too excited, as the standards for a Cal League first baseman are pretty high. Ishikawa's ace in the hole is an excellent glove that will help him advance. Good reserve fodder.

2003
