Johnson, 31, emerged as a star in the Japanese Central League in 2015, going 14-7 with a 1.85 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 150 strikeouts in 194.1 innings. The left-hander, who had a brief taste of the majors in 2013 and 2014 with the Pirates and Twins, is off to another hot start with Hiroshima this season, and the team will keep him in the fold long-term by offering him what is believed to be the largest guaranteed contract for a foreign player in Asia.

The 29-year-old lefty made his major league debut Aug. 18, hurling five scoreless relief innings before falling to Arizona in an impressive six-inning, two-run showing. Pittsburgh decided to give him another shot based on that fine outing, but he was blasted by St. Louis for five runs in two outings. He appeared in one game the rest of the way and never again started at the big-league level. The Twins then traded for him in November. Johnson will be expected to supply starting pitching depth in the Minnesota organization. He did put together his best minor-league numbers in 2013, going 10-4 with a 2.39 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 135.2 innings. Most likely, Johnson will start 2014 at Triple-A while waiting for an untimely injury to get another chance in the big leagues.
