RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2013

There was no outlook written for Kelvin De La Cruz.

2012

The 6-foot-5 southpaw is still being haunted by command and control issues, as demonstrated by his 5.97 BB/9IP last year at Double-A Akron. He did fan 95 batters in just 86 innings after missing over a month with some inflammation in his left shoulder. De La Cruz was shifted to the bullpen upon his return and had some success there so it will be interesting to see what the Indians do with him going forward. He flashes a low-90s fastball and a plus-curveball but his control issues are holding him back. For now, his upside may be too high for the Indians to completely abandon their hopes of him developing as a starter but they may not have much of a choice if he can't get a better grip on his control issues. Expect him to start the season back at Double-A.

2010

De La Cruz was added to the team's 40-man roster, despite just tossing 19.2 innings at High-A Kinston thanks to an elbow injury. He's a tall kid (6-foot-5) who has allowed just 206 hits and fanned 248 in 241.2 career minor league innings but has walked 118 so he has some work to do. He'll spend most of the season at High-A Kinston, but he'll still just be 22 this season and lefties often take a little bit longer to develop.
