2012
Viola received a third cup of coffee last September, his second as an Oriole. He impressed in his first full season at Triple-A, recording a 2.04 ERA behind 40 strikeouts in 39.2 innings while also limiting walks (2.95 BB/9IP) and home runs (0.45 HR/9IP). At 28, Viola was a bit old for the league, but he has a chance to break into the Orioles' bullpen this spring.
2011
Viola was snatched up off waivers last season from the Reds, and he pitched well in Double-A before a brief promotion at year's end. The Orioles might not have many left-handed options in the bullpen, and that could create an opportunity for Viola. He has no shot of closing, and thus not a whole lot of fantasy potential.
2010
Viola is just another lefty bullpen arm at this point in his career, and though he's had a good strikeout rate at each step of the minor leagues, his progress has been stymied once he hit the upper levels of the minors.
2008
Described as a "power lefty" and a late bloomer, Viola rocketed through three levels of the minors in 2007 and then pitched the Arizona Fall League, where he hit a rough patch. Viola's fastball occasionally peaks at 95 mph and he throws a decent slider. The usual caveats about relief prospects apply here, but a late-season callup isn't beyond the realm of possibility.
