RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Zach Collier.
Collier, 22, hit .269/.333/.399 with six home runs for High-A Clearwater and then hit .371/.461/.532 in the Arizona Fall League. The AFL performance likely helped earn him a 40-man roster spot as he previously looked like a fringe option to be protected in advance of December’s Rule 5 draft. He’ll open next season with Double-A Reading.
Collier has great tools, but is unrefined as a player, needing to improve his plate discipline and hone his swing to turn his strength into power. The Phillies have had luck with similar players, but he'll need time to figure things out. Don't expect a breakthrough soon.
Collier was drafted in the supplemental first round of the 2008 draft and hit .271 without any home runs in rookie ball last year, but did convert on all five of his stolen base attempts. He's a superior athlete but, at just 18 years of age, still has a few years to go before he'll be considered as a call-up for Philadelphia. Collier must develop his power at the plate in the meantime.
