RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2014

There was no outlook written for Dusty Ryan.

2010

Ryan burst onto the scene in 2008 with a solid campaign with Triple-A Toledo followed by a nice stint during a September callup, but his prospect status took a significant hit in 2009. The 25-year-old hit just .256 with the Mud Hens before faltering to a .154/.267/.192 line when given a midseason opportunity to claim a role as Gerald Laird's backup. His decline led to a trade to the Padres last fall. He can reclaim his status as a decent prospect with a good showing at Triple-A, but he still has enough raw power to possibly catch on as a backup with the Padres.

2009

Ryan broke out last year after toiling in the minors since being selected in the 48th round of the 2003 draft. He rose through Double-A and up to Triple-A before eventually hitting Detroit in September. He saw plenty of action behind the plate and his bat remained productive in the majors. However, the sample size of success is small and the Tigers don't have total faith in Ryan quite yet. The Tigers' trade for Gerald Laird relegates Ryan to backup duty at best. They might also bring in Matt Treanor to be the veteran backup, meaning that Ryan would start in Triple-A Toledo.
