Mier looked overmatched in his first taste of Double-A pitching, closing the year with a .235 batting average and an OBP (.323) higher than his slugging percentage (.314). Though disappointing, bear in mind that Mier was very young for the level at age 19 and had jumped to the Southern League all the way from rookie ball. The team still thinks of him as the shortstop of the future, despite the fact that he did not show much last season. For fantasy purposes, he's still a few years away from being a contributor in Houston, in the best-case scenario.
2010
The Astros surprised many when they made Mier a first-round pick. Scouts knew his speed and defense were legitimate big league tools, however, many doubted his bat would translate. He's still years away from Houston, but good raw tools combined with a standout work ethic may help him materialize into a fixture in the Astros' middle infield. Mier impressed in the Appalachian League last summer with a .276/.380/.484 line along with seven homers and 10 steals in 192 at-bats. He'll likely start 2010 as a 19-year-old at Low-A.
