Phillips hit well enough at Triple-A Las Vegas (.300/.372/.433), albeit in a hitter-friendly environment, to get himself into the mix at catcher with the departure of Rod Barajas. With the addition of John Buck in free agency, Phillips will battle Raul Chavez for the backup catching duties.
