2012
Villanueva's inability to miss bats caught up to him big time at Triple-A. He got hit hard when he pitched in the zone, forcing him to nibble at the corners to survive and consequently sending his walk rate soaring. His one desperate big league start was more of the same, and the only thing keeping him in the Marlins' immediate plans is a lack of pitching depth in the upper minors. It will probably be a while before he even hints at having future fantasy value.
2011
Looking at Villanueva's Double-A numbers in 2010 makes you think he's a future ace ... until you get to the strikeout column. He's a junkballing righty with outstanding control, and while once in a blue moon a Bob Tewksbury emerges who can make that shtick work in the majors, most of the time such hurlers never even sniff success in the bigs. Villanueva still has a lot to prove before he's worth rostering, despite those awesome Double-A numbers.
