2012
Smith was called up by the Reds too soon, borne out of desperation, in 2010. He held his own then, but came crashing back to earth in 2011. His upside is as a major league middle reliever, and not an especially good one at that.
2011
When the Reds called up Smith from Double-A Carolina last season, it was a bit of a head-scratcher. Smith had a 5.08 ERA in 28.1 innings in his first year as a reliever, with a mediocre strikeout rate. Naturally, Smith pitched pretty well for the Reds, posting a 3.86 ERA in 42 innings, walking just 11 in the process. We highlight his control, as that is Smith's strength. He'll probably begin 2011 at Triple-A Louisville.
