2024 Projections
Will open season on IL
Covey (shoulder) will begin this season on the injured list, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Covey has missed much of camp with a right shoulder injury and doesn't appear to have made much progress. It's not clear at this point how long he might be sidelined. Covey could fill a long-relief role for the Phillies once healthy, though he isn't guaranteed to be included on the big-league roster.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2019
2018
Covey made 21 starts and a six relief appearances for a struggling White Sox team, finishing with numbers which were mediocre at best. His 4.39 FIP did beat his 5.18 ERA by a fair amount but is certainly nothing to write home about. He kept the ball on the ground, posting an above-average 55.1% groundball rate, but that was his only real skill, as his 16.8% strikeout rate and 9.6% walk rate were poor. Now 27 years old, there's little reason to believe he'll suddenly improve into anything more than a back-end starter or swingman. He did post a 2.25 ERA out of the bullpen, which was far better than his 5.50 mark in the rotation, though the sample size was quite small. It would take a major improvement for him to profile as a high-leverage reliever.
