RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2013

There was no outlook written for Ozzie Martinez.

2012

Martinez's 2010 campaign helped convince the Marlins to deal Dan Uggla, but his 2011 effort convinced them to send him to the White Sox. He hit a paltry .245/.296/.322 in 88 at-bats in his first Triple-A experience. He might have struggled against the advanced pitching, as he struck out in 15.4 percent of his plate appearances in 2011 after posting a rate of 10.9 in his breakout 2010. He has shown little power and average ability on the basepaths thus far in his career, but he could appear as a major league infield sub in 2012

2011

Martinez had a breakout season at Double-A and looked right at home in the majors during a September callup, and while Omar Infante is expected to replace Dan Uggla at second base, it's Martinez who probably convinced Marlins brass that Uggla was expendable. He's smooth defensively at shortstop and makes great contact at the plate, and while he doesn't have much in the way of power, a .300 batting average with double-digit steals are certainly attainable numbers for him if he wins a starting gig this spring. Down the road he could be the guy who bumps Hanley Ramirez to a less demanding defensive position, but in the short term a year on the bench as a utility player, or back in Triple-A getting steady work, shouldn't hurt him.
