RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Francisco Martinez.
Following Nick Franklinís ascent through the Marinersí farm system, Martinez was deemed expendable and moved to his original team. While he was highly touted by the Tigersí brass in his previous stint with the team, Martinezís status as a legitimate big league prospect has taken a hit the past few seasons. He split his 2013 campaign between Double-A Jackson and High-A Lakeland, hitting .268/.316/.341 with three homers and 33 RBI in 414 at-bats. His plate discipline remained a problem area, as Martinez racked up 98 strikeouts and just 27 walks. Entering his age-23 season, Martinez will have to start producing at the higher levels of the minor leagues to work his way back onto the radar in deep keeper leagues that value prospects.
Martinez was the big prize in last season's Doug Fister trade with Detroit. Martinez hit .310 after the trade at Double-A Jackson with an .807 OPS. Overall, he walked 23 times compared to 104 strikeouts as his plate discipline needs work. Just 21, he's likely headed back to Jackson to begin the 2012 season.
