Schwinden bounced between starting and relieving after being drafted in the 22nd round of the 2008 draft out of Fresno Pacific University, steadily advancing up the ladder year-by-year. He took a major step forward in 2011, going 8-8 with a 3.95 ERA and 134 strikeouts over 145.2 innings in 26 starts for Triple-A Buffalo, though he ran out of gas late in the year. Schwinden, a flyball pitcher who throws a low-90s fastball, cutter/slider and curveball, made four starts in September for the Mets and could break camp as the fifth starter if Johan Santana is not ready for the start of the season.
