RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2014

There was no outlook written for Cole De Vries.

2013

De Vries was never considered a top prospect, but was productive enough at Triple-A with a 4.24 ERA and 37:7 K:BB in 46.2 innings to be called up to the majors when the Twins became desperate for starters. He did not have a great strikeout rate at Triple-A and lacked velocity (89.8 mph average fastball), and given his age, his upside appeared limited. However, De Vries had a decent 4.11 ERA with good control in the majors (58:18 K:BB in 87.2 innings). Still, his strikeout rate was low (6.0 K/9) and his FIP (5.00) suggested he got lucky on balls in play. He will enter spring training with a shot to stay in the rotation, but his upside seems limited give that he is 28 and lacks a strong pedigree, velocity or groundball rate.
