Light, who was reassigned to minor league camp Tuesday, needs to throw his splitter for strikes in order to progress to the major leagues, according to Boston manager John Farrell, the Boston Globe reports. "He's got a big arm. There's no denying the velocity," Farrell said, "Two keys for him for his further progression are going to be consistent fastball location and can he throw that split for strikes?"

RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2016

There was no outlook written for Pat Light.

2014

Light's development took a hit in 2013 when he lost two months to a hamstring injury and he finished with just 34.1 innings. The tall righty has a good pitcher's frame, but there's some work to do. His fastball velocity fluctuated within games; he didn't locate it well and it was hittable. Further, Light needs to develop his secondary pitches. As a result, the bullpen could be in his future.

2013

Light was Boston's first-round draft pick out of Monmouth University in 2012. He has a long frame that can handle the added weight as he matures. His fastball is mid-90s and tops out 97 mph. Light has a very smooth delivery with good downhill trajectory. He'll need to develop his slider and changeup in order to remain a starter, but should have success with just a fastball at Low-A. He could develop into a late-inning reliever, with closer potential.
