Rogers was released by the Pirates on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Rogers requested the release so he could sign with a professional team in Japan, but leaves after two relatively productive seasons with Triple-A Indianapolis. Despite his .289 batting average and nine home runs this season, the 29-year-old was mainly bound to serve as organizational depth behind rising first baseman Josh Bell, catalyzing his request for a release. Rogers went 2-for-25 with nine strikeouts for the Pirates last year, his last appearance in the majors.

2014
The Pirates were likely looking for a repeat of Rogers' 2015 campaign when they traded away Keon Broxton and Trey Supak for his services in December of 2015. What they got was a whole lot of nothing. After batting .296 with an .808 OPS in 196 plate appearances for the Brewers, Rogers disappointed with a sluggish Triple-A performance (.263/.338/.371) and just two hits in 25 at-bats for Pittsburgh. The 28-year-old is up against a logjam of corner infielder types, and his best shot with the Bucs is probably as a bench player. He'll look to reestablish his career path as he turns 29 in 2017.
It took Rogers a while to move up through the minors, but he emerged as an excellent hitter in the Brewers organization. He mashed with Triple-A Colorado Springs, slashing .344/.449/.607 in 33 games, which helped him rise to gain a bench role for the Brewers. The 27-year-old held his own in the majors as well, slashing .296/.367/.441, although he only managed four homers and 16 RBI in 169 plate appearances. The lack of home runs limits his upside at the corner infield in the long term, but Rogers will compete for a reserve infield role with the Pirates after he was traded to Pittsburgh in the offseason.
Rogers continued to hit in 2014 and finished with the best numbers of his minor league career with Triple-A Nashville. He was playing in the hitter-friendly PCL, but his .947 OPS speaks for itself, and he also spent the season transitioning to third base. The Brewers believe he can stick at the hot corner, or play another position if needed, so he will have a shot to earn a utility spot with the big league club during spring training, and could even form the right-handed part of a first-base platoon with Adam Lind.
Rogers was not considered more than an average prospect before 2013 despite posting a career OPS above .800, but he made a name for himself last season by leading the Southern League in both home runs and RBI. Rogers was a bit old for his level at age 25, but he displayed a good eye at the plate in addition to his strong power numbers. Despite the big season, Rogers may open 2014 at Double-A, with fellow prospect Hunter Morris likely opening the campaign as the regular first baseman at Triple-A.
