RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Dave Veres.
Veres was plagued by shoulder problems for most of 2003, managing only 33 innings. The Cubs won't re-sign him for 2004, but at press-time, there is some talk that he could wind up back in Colorado where he was once the closer and get a shot to compete for the job once again, provided, of course, that his shoulder holds up. Veres has decent command and average stuff, and as such, has been a serviceable closer/setup guy over the past few seasons.
The Cardinals declined their $5.25 million option on the former closer because you donít pay middle relievers closer money (some would argue that you shouldnít pay closers closer money, but thatís besides the point). As a result, Veres is a free agent. If Veres, who has a 196/92 K/BB ratio over the last three seasons, signs for a club that plays in a pitcherís park, heíll do a decent job as a setup guy.
