RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Ruben Mateo.
Last season represented a continuing variation on a theme for Mateo's career with the Reds. After suffering a badly broken leg in 2000, he has never been able to overcome the downgrade in his tools to make up for his weaknesses, and thus appears to be a poor bet to achieve anything near the tremendous potential he once had as a Rangers prospect. He joins Brandon Larson and Wily Mo Pena as players without options remaining who will have to fight for a roster spot.
Mateo has never been able to work his way back to his pre-injury form. Time isn't quite running out on him yet – he'll be just 25 in 2003, but he's nowhere near the prospect he used to be. Plate discipline has never been part of his skill set.
