2013
There was no outlook written for John Riedling.
2006
Riedling was expected to bolster the Marlins middle relief corps, but instead was barely able to hold his own at Triple-A between bouts of shoulder soreness. It's starting to look like his heavy 2003 workload took a serious toll on Riedling -- the Cardinals will give him another chance to show he has something left, however.
2005
Riedling had a tough 2004, both professionally and personally (his father died after a long illness). His performance plummeted significantly over the second half (7.12 ERA and seven homers allowed in 30.1 innings). Were his struggles emotionally-related or just physically? Don't spend much trying to find out.
2004
Riedling started the year as the Reds' primary set-up man and a potential closer candidate. He ended the year as an ex-starter and current middle reliever who doesn't dominate hitters enough to overcome his walk rate.
2003
Riedling recovered from arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn labrum to post a decent second half of the season. He'll be in the mix to pitch in late inning relief, provided he can stay healthy. A small concern is a spike in his walk rate in 2002, but that may be attributable to him working back into form.
