2005
When you need to start keeping a running tally on Tommy John surgeries you know it hasn't been a fun three years. Zimmerman expects to miss most, if not all, of the 2005 season following July surgery. If he ever gets back to the big leagues, he'll have earned it. A minor league deal with Texas for 2005 seems likely.
2004
Zimmerman's elbow problems never cleared up to the point where he was able to pitch in the majors last season. Further tests in September didn't reveal anything unexpected, so he'll find himself in a similar situation in March. He's due to make over $3 million this year, so there might be some organizational pressure to get him back on the mound closing games.
2003
Spring training “elbow soreness” resulted in a few aborted rehab assignments and eventually led to Tommy John surgery in late July. Recovery time can vary anywhere from 10 to 18 months, so there's no telling when he might return until he starts throwing a baseball again. Look for rehab news around the time spring training rolls around and react accordingly. The success rate of returning from elbow surgery continues to increase, so his career should be back on track at some point.
