RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2016

There was no outlook written for Buddy Carlyle.

2015

At age 36, Carlyle turned in the best big league season of his career, pitching to a 1.45 ERA over 31 innings the Mets. Pinpoint control was the driving skill (1.5 BB/9), though it should be noted that he also reaped the benefits of a 87.3% LOB%. Twice during the season, the Mets designated him for assignment, but he accepted a trip to Las Vegas after passing through waivers. Subsequently, there is reason to believe that his opportunities to pitch in the big leagues may be nearing an end. Caryle will try to win a spot in the Mets bullpen again this spring, but it's difficult to imagine a scenario where he will receive more responsibility than a sporadic middle-relief gig.

2009

Carlyle quietly had a productive season for the Braves in a limited role with a 59:26 K:BB ratio in 62.7 innings. His strikeout rate improved from the previous season, so he may be able to keep a middle-relief role in 2009.

2008

Carlyle was a feel-good story in 2007, pitching in the majors for the first time since 2005. But he faded after the All-Star break with a 5.75 ERA and a 40:19 K:BB ratio in 61 innings. He'll contend for the fifth starter job this spring, but more likely he'll add depth at Triple-A. Still, his strong 56:9 K:BB ratio in 48.2 innings at Triple-A show he could surprise.
