2013
There was no outlook written for Saul Rivera.
2010
Rivera got his ground balls in 2009, but big league hitters learned quickly to lay off his sinker and wait for something juicier to hit, which Rivera obligingly provided them. He'll compete for a spot in the Cleveland bullpen this spring, but Rivera may end up starting the year at Triple-A Columbus if he's unable to regain his pre-2009 form.
2009
Rivera gets groundballs and an occasional strikeout, which is good enough to make him Joel Hanrahan's top set-up man heading into the spring. He's no Luis Ayala though, either in terms of the workload he can handle or his G/F ratio, and won't post the numbers Ayala did a few years ago.
2008
The Nationals leaned heavily on Rivera in 2007 and he turned in a pretty good year, using his heavy sinker to keep the ball in the park and let his defense clean up after him. He gets a decent number of strikeouts but walks too many to be really reliable, and an 85 appearance, 93 inning workload isn't going to help his longevity. As low-upside middle relievers go, you can probably do better.
2007
After a solid Double-A campaign in 2005 Rivera got the call to the majors when the Nationals bullpen was strapped for arms but he didn't distinguish himself, walking too many batters without striking out enough of them. The Nationals still need someone to fill the middle innings so Rivera could break camp with the club, but the results may not be much better.
