Stanford has been released by the Indians organization just 27 days after rejoining Triple-A Buffalo as a free agent, The Buffalo News reports.
ANALYSIS
Stanford showed some promise earlier in the decade but his career has flat lined and he's 31 years old. He was 1-3 with a 3.90 ERA in six games for Buffalo with a 1.74 WHIP and 24:20 K:BB ratio in 42 innings, numbers not good enough for the Indians to feel the need to keep him around.

Half of the recuperation time for Tommy John surgery seems to take place after the pitcher has returned to the mound, regaining the throwing motion and confidence in it. With that in mind, Stanford should probably be considered fully healed by midseason. He was healthy enough to throw 24-plus innings late in the season for various minor-league teams and also get in a tussle with Cleveland police in September. Cleveland hopes Stanford will have more to occupy his time in future Septembers.
Stanford's 2004 season was cut short after undergoing Tommy John surgery, but the young left-hander has shown promise. With his great control and hard fastball he is sure to be a fairly solid starter once he has fully rehabbed. Depending on how far he has progressed, the Indians might look to him as a starter at some point in 2005.
Stanford made eight spot starts over 50 innings last season and will likely battle for a roster spot in the spring. He has decent control and command of his pitches, so may have a shot, but at the end of the day's he's a placeholder until the Tribe's more talented prospects are ready for prime-time.
