Spooneybarger, who had Tommy John surgery in September 2003, last week underwent another procedure on the muscle tissue surrounding the new ligament, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Consider Spooneybarger's condition a reminder that TJ surgery is still surgery, and not a miracle cure for pitchers.

Spooneybarger became one of those rare players for whom Tommy John surgery was not just a blip on their career radar -- he's now missed two entire seasons following the procedure, and was forced back under the knife in August to repair some further damage. It's going to be a long, slow road back for the former closer-of-the-future.
Assuming he's fully recovered from Tommy John surgery by spring training, Spooneybarger will be penciled in as Guillermo Mota's prime set-up man, and his caddy as should Mota falter. He's exactly the kind of guy you should toss your endgame $1 at.
Spooneybarger's 4.07 ERA is entirely deceptive -- his WHIP was 0.90, he was taken yard just once, and he struck out three times as many batters as he walked. Unfortunately, Tommy John surgery means he won't be able to pick up where he left off until sometime late in 2004, if not 2005.
Spooneybarger excelled in a setup role in Atlanta last year making a smooth transition to the big leagues. His trade to Florida means he could challenge Braden Looper for the closer job. However, there are still a few rough edges for him to smooth out. Spooneybarger only struck out 33 batters in 51.1 IP, and even more worrisome, walked 26. He's only 23 years old, so there's plenty of time for him to improve his control, but 2003 might not be the season he puts it all together.
