RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2014

There was no outlook written for Joe Valentine.

2005

Valentine keeps getting opportunities to close because of his fastball, but his 25 walks in 29 innings with the Reds last year tells you all you need to know about his potential to keep such a role. Think Mike MacDougal without as much stuff.

2004

How often do you see minor league closers making it in the same role in the majors? Very infrequently. That's not to say that Valentine can't succeed in the major leagues, but his control needs to improve if he's going to gain the confidence of a major league manager. On the positive side, he has an outstanding fastball and slider, but needs to work on harnessing both.

2003

The Sox never seemed to take a shine to Valentine, even losing him in the Rule 5 draft at one point, but now that he's out of the White Sox system, he projects to be a solid set-up man if he can harness his stuff, with the potential to actually succeed as a major league closer someday (something very few minor league closers do.) Keep an eye on him this spring.
