2004
Stephens had another typical season at Triple-A Ottawa in 2003, posting a 132:39 K:BB ratio in 158.2 innings, but not even getting a courtesy call-up in September from the Orioles. Because Stephens is a soft-tosser who gets by on guile rather than raw physical ability, he'll always have to fight off his critics in order just to get another major league opportunity, which doesn't appear to be coming anytime soon in Baltimore.
2003
Stephens was hit hard at times last season and it was learned he pitched with a fractured right foot all season. He's a control pitcher who was having a good Triple-A season (11-5, 3.03 ERA, 118/23 K/BB ratio) when called up to Baltimore. We'll give him pass because of the injury, but it remains to be seen if the soft-tossing Stephens can survive in the majors. He'll compete for a starting spot in spring training.
