RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2013

There was no outlook written for Guillermo Quiroz.

2009

As the backup catcher in 2008, Quiroz sat behind a healthy Ramon Hernandez. He hit just .187 over the course of the season and his chances of playing into an everyday situation are out the window the moment the Orioles decide to give Matt Wieters the job.

2006

Quiroz showed good power and little else in his brief stint at Triple-A Syracuse, which followed a shoulder injury and a collapsed lung. The luster has worn off his star the past two years, thanks largely to injuries, and there's now considerable doubt that he'll ever develop the power and patience to make him a threat from behind the plate. He'll split time behind the plate with Gregg Zaun in 2006.

2005

Quiroz' 2004 was a major step back. He entered the season as one of the premier catching prospects not named Joe Mauer but was sidelined for nearly two months at Triple-A Syracuse with a broken hand and his numbers (.227/.309/.404) suffered as a result. He's expected to start the year at Triple-A again after a brief September stint with Toronto, and needs to flash his patience and power to re-emerge.

2004

Quiroz should be considered right up there with Jeff Mathis behind Joe Mauer when talking about the top catching prospects in the game. A collapsed lung ended his season early at Double-A, but he's back playing winter ball and was the early season leader in homers. Walks and power from the catcher spot are a rare find, and Quiroz has both. He'll be ready to take over the catching duties after Greg Myers leaves following 2004.

2003

He's was one of the younger regulars in the Florida State League in 2002, so his .260/.330/.421 season looks a bit more impressive. He'll spend most of 2003 at Double-A, and his eventual role will likely be as backup to Kevin Cash a few years from now.
