2007
After missing all of 2005 to shoulder surgery, Blackley returned to Double-A San Antonio last season and showed some of the promise that made him the organization's 2003 minor league pitcher of the year. Although not a hard thrower (he relies primarily on location and change of speeds) Blackley struck out 6.25 batters per nine innings in 25 starts and showed good control. After making the Texas League All-Star Game, Blackley was a late-season call-up to Triple-A Tacoma where he didn't do much in two starts. The Australian lefty likely will get a full season at Triple-A in 2007 and could get a late-season call-up to Seattle.
2006
Blackley missed all of 2005 after surgery to repair two tears in the labrum of his throwing shoulder. The organization's 2003 minor league pitcher of the year, Blackley proved he wasn't ready for prime time in 2004 with a disappointing call-up. If healthy, he could contend for a bullpen spot. More likely, though, he'll test his surgically repaired shoulder at Triple-A Tacoma.
2005
After a couple of promising minor league campaigns, Blackley was a mid-season call-up for the Mariners in 2004. He struggled mightily with his control, though, and found himself back in Triple-A Tacoma where his season ended with shoulder tendinitis. He's still on the Mariners' radar, but he proved he's not ready for the bigs just yet.
2004
Blackley, a lefty, has a good shot at joining the Mariners rotation should a spot open. He was the Texas League's Pitcher of the Year for league champion San Antonio last season, going 17-3 with a 2.61 ERA in 27 starts. He was the first Texas League pitcher with 17 wins since Jeff Reardon in 1978. A control pitcher, Blackley has big-league stuff, but he's only 20, so expect more seasoning before he makes it to the bigs. Looks like a good keeper prospect.
